Jones was born Justus Ellis McQueen Jr. on August 19, 1927, in Beaumont, Texas, to Jessie Paralee and railroad worker Justus Ellis McQueen Sr.
In the 1955 movie Battle Cry, Jones made his acting debut as Justus McQueen, who was his real name at the time. But the name of his character in that movie was “L. Q. Jones,” a name he loved and chose to use as his stage name for all of his future acting assignments.
