Kofi Atta Annan (born 8 April 1938) is a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006. He is the son of a Ghanaian diplomat who worked at the United Nations during World War II. Deputy Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the United Nations were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 “for their contributions to a more organised and peaceful world.”
He serves as the Chairman of The Elders, a group that was established by Nelson Mandela in 1994. He served as the United Nations–Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria from February 2012 to August 2012, assisting in the settlement of the country’s long-running civil war. In his resignation letter, Annan expressed his frustration with the United Nations’ failure to make progress in conflict resolution, saying that “at a time when the Syrian people urgently need action, there continues to be finger-pointing and name-calling in the Security Council.”
