Kevin Richard Coombs, the celebrated Australian wheelchair basketball player and athlete, made an indelible mark on the world of sports through his remarkable Paralympic career. As the first Aboriginal athlete to represent Australia in the Paralympic Games, Coombs’ legacy is a testament to his extraordinary achievements and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Born and raised in a close-knit family in rural Victoria, Coombs faced early hardships after the loss of his mother when he was just five years old. Tragedy struck once again when, at the age of twelve, Coombs was unintentionally shot in the back while out hunting rabbits, leaving him paraplegic.

It was during his recovery at the Royal Austin Recovery Hospital in Melbourne that Coombs was introduced to sports. Little did the world know that this introduction would lead to an illustrious Paralympic career that would span five Games, including the inaugural Paralympics in 1960.

Coombs’ Paralympic journey took him to Rome in 1960, Tel Aviv in 1968, Heidelberg in 1972, Arnhem in 1980, and New York/Stoke Mandeville in 1984. Throughout his career, he was a key member of the Australian men’s wheelchair basketball squad. In the 1972 Games, he held the dual role of coach and captain, while in 1984, he proudly served as the team’s captain.

Beyond wheelchair basketball, Coombs also competed in athletics at the Paralympic Games in 1968 and 1972. His leadership and athletic prowess were not confined to the Paralympics alone. He led the Australian wheelchair basketball team to gold medal victories at the 1977 and 1982 FESPIC Games and captained the team at the 1977 Silver Jubilee Games. Coombs also participated in the Wheelchair Basketball World Championship and captained the Australian wheelchair basketball team, which secured a silver medal at the 1974 Commonwealth Paraplegic Games in Dunedin.
