Kei’s several nicknames

Nishikori is usually addressed by several nicknames. One of them is ‘Air K.’

It is because, despite his relatively short height by professional tennis standards, he has a leaping forehand, which is rarely seen among his Asian mates.

Another one is ‘Project 45’, which was given to him when he was training at Florida’s Elite Bollettieri Academy.

The name refers to his goal of surpassing Shuzo Matsuoka’s ranking of 46, which is the highest a Japanese man has climbed in the Open era.

Nishikori’s Injuries

Kei withdrew from the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open because of an injured right elbow for the first time in 2009.

In 2017, he withdrew from the US Open in Cincinnati with a right wrist problem.

He went through a scan that revealed a tear in one of the tendons.

Nishikori then announced he would miss the season, which made him fall to World number 22 and his first time out of the top 20 rankings.

After the 2019 US Open, Kei had suffered an elbow injury that ruled him out for the start of the 2020 season.

His comeback was further delayed after being tested positive for the COVID-19 test twice.

Kei has not been married yet. He has been dating his long-term girlfriend, Honami Tsuboi.
