Kathryn Jurado (born Mara Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado Garca on January 16, 1924 in Mexico City, Mexico; died on July 5, 2002 in Los Angeles, California) was a Mexican actress who had a successful film career in Mexico and Hollywood. When Jurado arrived in Hollywood in the 1940s, she had already made a name for herself as an actress in Mexico, and she quickly established herself as a regular in Western films of the 1950s and 1960s.
A number of Hollywood legends, including Gary Cooper in High Noon, Spencer Tracy in Broken Lance, and Marlon Brando in One-Eyed Jacks, and respected directors, including Fred Zinnemann (High Noon), Sam Peckinpah (Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid), and John Huston (Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid), were among those with whom she collaborated (Under the Volcano). Throughout her career, Jurado appeared in seventy-one films. She was the first Latin American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actress in 1954’s Broken Lance, and the first to get a Golden Globe Award, in 1952.
She was also the first Latin American actress to win a Golden Globe Award. She, like many other Latin actresses, was typecast to portray ethnic parts in American films, as was the case with many other Latin actors. She, on the other hand, had a wider range of parts in Mexican films, and she sometimes sang and danced as well. Jurado was one of a number of Mexican actresses who found success in the United States. Dolores del Ro and Lupe Vélez are among the others.
