Karamoko Dembele Celtic

Celtic U-13

In 2013, Karamoko Dembele joined Celtic aged 10. He was named as the player of the tournament in July 2016, when representing Celtic U13 at the St Kevin’s Boys Academy Cup. Brendan Rodgers invited Dembélé to participate in a light technical training session with the first team squad soon after his appointment as Celtic head coach.

Karamoko Dembele Debut

Dembélé gained widespread media attention on 3 October 2016, after making his debut for Celtic’s Under-20 side aged 13 playing with and against players who were up to seven age groups above him. He was named on the bench because several regular starters were away playing for Scotland’s Under-19 team and he was brought in during the 81st minute. He replaced the youngest first-team player in Celtic’s history, the 16-year-old Jack Aitchison.

A match report on the official Celtic website stated that “the diminutive playmaker didn’t look out of place and played his part in the closing stages.” The response to Dembélé’s U20 debut included concern about the physical and mental impact of such a young player being fast-tracked through the developmental ranks.

Dembele featured for Celtic’s academy team in April 2019, in the seasonal finals of both the Scottish Youth Cup and the Glasgow Cup, losing out 3–2 to Rangers in the first and beating the same opposition by the same scoreline in the second.

He signed his first professional contract on 24 December 2018, at 15-years-old with Celtic, set to keep him at the club until 2021. However, his salary and other emoluments have not been disclosed and therefore, it is difficult to establish his net worth. We shall be keen to update this information once it is available.

Karamoko Dembele Celtic Trophy

On 19 May 2019, Karamoko Dembélé made his senior debut in a 2–1 victory against Hearts, coming on as a second-half substitute. Dembélé collected his winners’ medal after the match and helped to lift the Scottish Premiership trophy as Celtic ended the season 9 points clear at the top of the league. His performance was praised by manager Neil Lennon.

He was named in the squad for the 2019 Scottish Cup Final six days later, also against Hearts. This time he did not leave the bench but collected a winner’s medal following Celtic’s 2–1 victory.

Karamoko Dembele Barcelona

In 2015, Barcelona’s scouts had Dembele under control and were in contact with his representatives, convinced that he had everything to be a star in the future. Dembele, himself, was ready to play for Barça but the club, after all their efforts in scouting, decided not to go through with a deal because it could have potentially led to problems with FIFA again. By this time, Dembele had already debuted with Celtic’s U20 side and for the Scotland U16 team.

After watching him at various youth tournaments, he became a target for Barca’s scouts as he impressed them. It was the player’s age which put the brakes on the operation, although the reports and contacts were saved. What raises eyebrows is that the player has since become known on a larger scale after debuting for Celtic’s U20 side and videos of him going viral on social media.

Celtic now won’t let anyone close to the player. Both Manchester City and Manchester United are desperate to sign Karamoko Dembele for their academies, but the Scottish champions have asked for FIFA to protect the young teenager after his appearances in the media. Barcelona was the first club to move for him, though. Maybe in the future, he’ll remember that they were the side that wanted to take a chance on him.
