Julius Sello Malema (born March 3, 1981) is the founder and head of the Economic Freedom Fighters, a political organisation in South Africa that he established in July 2013. He has also served as the president of the African National Congress Youth League in the past. Malema was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) until April 2012, when he was expelled. Malema has come to prominence in South African public and political life as a result of his support for African National Congress president, and subsequently President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma. Zuma and the Premier of Limpopo Province have both referred to him as South Africa’s “next leader.” In less flattering portrayals, he is seen as a “reckless populist” who threatens to destabilise South Africa and ignite racial war. In March 2010 and September 2011, he was found guilty of hate speech.
He was found guilty of fostering splits within the ANC in November 2011 and was suspended from the party for five years, in addition to his two-year suspended sentence from May 2010. He was also found guilty of hate speech in 2011 after performing the song “Dubula iBunu” (Shoot the Boer). The African National Congress’s appeal committee stated on February 4, 2012 that it found no cause to “vary” a disciplinary committee judgement made in 2011, but did discover evidence of aggravation of conditions, prompting them to apply the harsher penalty of expulsion from the ANC. Malema lost an appeal to have his expulsion from the ANC reversed on April 25, 2012, and since this was his last appeal, his expulsion took effect immediately. He was accused with fraud in September 2012.
