Peterson’s health issues initially came to light in September 2019, when his family disclosed that he had spent time in rehab in upstate New York.
In 2017, his family doctor prescribed the benzodiazepine clonazepam for anxiety caused by a “severe immunological reaction to meals.”
After Peterson’s wife was diagnosed with kidney cancer in April 2019, his doctor allegedly raised his dose.

Doctors in a Russian clinic had put him in a nine-day coma after he became addicted to benzodiazepines.
Peterson and his family relocated to Belgrade, Serbia, for additional treatment many months following his treatment in Russia. Peterson makes his first public appearance in over a year in June 2020.
