Johnny Logan Eurovision Song Contest ’79, ’80 And ’92
Logan first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in 1979. ESC is a song competition with participants representing their European country held every year. From his first attempt, Johnny placed third in the Irish National Final with the song “Angie”. Readers of the Connaught Telegraph in Ireland voted Logan as Best New Male Artist.
Although Jonny Logan was third in 1979s USC competition, he didn’t despair and eventually reauditioned in 1980 with the Shay Healy song “What’s Another Year“. Moreover, he won the Irish final on 9 March in Dublin. Additionally, Logan made another attempt at ESC in Belgium with his original song titled, “Hold Me Now” in 1987.
Hold Me Now won the competition thus Logan became the first person in history to win the ESC contest twice. Furthermore, “Hold Me Now” became a major European hit song and reached number two in the UK charts.
Having composed the Irish Eurovision Song Contest 1984 entry for Linda Martin, “Terminal 3”, Logan repeated the collaboration in 1992 when he gave Martin another of his songs, “Why Me“. Moreover, this song was not only the Irish entry at the finals in Sweden but also the winning song in the competition.
To put this into perspective, Logan became the most successful artist in ESC history with three wins. Additionally, Johnny continues to perform and write songs and is often referred with the alias “Mister Eurovision“.
