John Pavlovitz Biography

Syracuse native John Pavlovitz is an American Christian pastor and author, known for his social and political writings from a liberal Christian perspective. He began a blog Stuff That Needs To Be Said in 2012, and was fired from Good Shepherd in 2013, in response to “provocative” articles he’d posted. He later became a youth minister at North Raleigh Community Church.

His blog has gained a large following and media attention for articles he has written on the subjects of acceptance of homosexuality (“If I Have Gay Children”, 2014),  attitudes about rape (“To Brock Turner’s Father, From Another Father”, 2016), the presidential candidacy of Hillary Clinton (“Thank You, Hillary”, 2016),  and the character of Donald Trump (“It’s time we stopped calling Donald Trump a Christian”, 2017).

In 2017, Westminster John Knox Press published his first book A Bigger Table: Building Messy, Authentic, and Hopeful Spiritual Community, which describes what he sees as the four foundations of the Christian church and argues for creating a more inclusive society and church community.

His second book Hope and Other Superpowers: A Life-Affirming, Love-Defending, Butt-Kicking, World-Saving Manifesto offers advice for individuals seeking to counter “the highly partisan cultural climate”, and was published by Simon & Schuster in November 2018.

John Pavlovitz Church

Pastor

He is a Wake Forest resident, minister at North Raleigh Community Church. John is also a former megachurch pastor. John and his fiancée realized they wanted to have a church wedding, and the only institution that welcomed them was a small Methodist church in suburban Pennsylvania. They liked its coziness, so the Pavlovitzes continued there as congregants after they were married. One day, a church leader asked if he would serve as the church’s youth pastor. He immediately agreed it seems he had found his calling.

After a stint in seminary and more time at the Pennsylvania church, the couple moved to Charlotte, where Pavlovitz got a job as a youth pastor at a megachurch, the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church; he spent nearly a decade there. To be an integral member of a church family, Pavlovitz found, was to be part of something greater than oneself, something warm and welcoming. The sense of belonging was powerful.

John Pavlovitz Quotes

“One of the biggest, most damaging mistakes too many Christians so willingly make is assuming that God is as much of a judgmental jerk as we are. But what if we could make room for difference and space for disagreement in our spiritual communities? What if we could give permission for moral failure and freedom to not be certain, and the chance to gloriously fail without needing those things to become black marks against people or death-penalty offenses? What if we made space for people who are as screwed up as we are?”

John Pavlovitz A Bigger Table

No one likes to eat alone; to approach a table filled with people, only to be told that despite the open chairs there isn’t room for you. The rejection stings. It leaves a mark. Yet this is exactly what the church has been saying to far too many people for far too long: “You’re not welcome here. Find someplace else to sit. How can we extend unconditional welcome and acceptance in a world increasingly marked by bigotry, fear, and exclusion?

Pastor John Pavlovitz invites readers to join him on the journey to find—or build—a church that is big enough for everyone. He speaks clearly into the heart of the issues the Christian community has been earnestly wrestling with LGBT inclusion, gender equality, racial tensions, and global concerns. A Bigger Table: Building Messy, Authentic, Hopeful Spiritual Community asks if organized Christianity can find a new way of faithfully continuing the work Jesus began two thousand years ago, where everyone gets a seat.

Pavlovitz shares moving personal stories and his careful observations as a pastor to set the table for a new, more loving conversation on these and other important matters of faith. He invites us to build the bigger table Jesus imagined, practicing radical hospitality, total authenticity, messy diversity, and agenda-free community.
