Australian born John Hempton is an investor. He is the founder, co-owner and CIO of Bronte Capital, a hedge fund management company. Mr. Hempton is Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager at Bronte Capital Management Pty Ltd.
John was the Partner and Financial Analyst at Platinum Asset Management. From 1998 to 1999, he served as the Chief Analyst of Tax Policies in New Zealand Treasury. Mr. Hempton also served as an Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer at ANZ Bank New Zealand from 1997 to 1998.
He also did strategic planning at ANZ Bank, Melbourne in 1997. Mr. Hempton served in various positions (mostly tax policy) at the Australian Treasury from 1991 to 1997.

Although mid-2013 Hempton was featured on CNBC stating that Herbalife were “scumbags” but that he was still investing in them. Hempton has since researched the company further and continued to invest in it while viewing it as highly ethical.
In 2018 Ackman exited his near-billion-dollar investment position against Herbalife after the company’s stock price continued to rise.

Herbalife has massively increased since Hempton bought the stock. The US Federal Trade Commission has been investigating Herbalife’s marketing practices since 2014. In May, Herbalife’s shares surged after the company said it was in late-stage talks to resolve the probe, and expected to pay about $US200 million.
