Joe Schmidt Aims to Instill New Grit in Wallaby Mentality After World Cup Setback

In a bid to reshape the Wallabies’ mindset following the World Cup disappointment under Eddie Jones, newly appointed coach Joe Schmidt cautioned against expecting an immediate transformation. Schmidt, the former Ireland coach, shared his insights during a press conference in Sydney, where he was officially introduced after agreeing to a two-year deal with Rugby Australia.

Expressing his view that the Wallabies’ performance in last year’s World Cup did not align with the Australian rugby tradition he recognized, Schmidt emphasized the need for patience in the process of healing and rebuilding. Eddie Jones, the former Wallabies mentor, faced criticism for his squad selection and tactics, contributing to Australia’s unprecedented exit from the World Cup group stage.

Schmidt acknowledged the challenges ahead but remained optimistic about instilling a renewed sense of determination and cohesion within the team. He pointed to the importance of continuity in selection and performance and underscored the significance of the players’ shared experience in the World Cup as a potential source of motivation.

“I’d like to think that they’ll emerge with an experience that they are desperate not to repeat,” said Schmidt. “They’ll work hard towards getting that cohesion amongst themselves.”

With a focus on patience and understanding the setbacks some players may have faced, Schmidt highlighted the upcoming challenges while expressing his excitement about assisting the younger generation in rebuilding their confidence.

Schmidt’s initial assignment as Wallabies coach will be against Wales in July, preceding the Rugby Championship. He also emphasized his desire to bring emerging homegrown coaches into his backroom staff, prioritizing the development of players within the Super Rugby system over recruiting overseas-based talent.

“In my experience with Ireland, we didn’t select anyone who wasn’t contracted in Ireland,” Schmidt explained. “It would be great if we can select almost entirely from Australia, rather than chase guys from overseas.”

As Schmidt embarks on this new chapter, he brings a wealth of coaching experience and a vision aimed at fostering a resilient Wallabies mentality that reflects the rich rugby heritage of Australia.
