Joe Lombardi is the current offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League. He formerly worked for the New York Giants (NFL). On January 21, 2014, he was hired away from the New Orleans Saints, where he had previously served as quarterbacks coach. Before the Saints’ Super Bowl-winning season in 2009, Lombardi worked as an offensive assistant for them from 2007 to 2009. He was promoted to quarterbacks coach shortly after. Starting quarterback Drew Brees established numerous passing records during Lombardi’s tenure in New Orleans, including passing for more than 5,000 yards four times (three of which occurred while Lombardi served as quarterbacks coach) and setting the record (which has since been surpassed) for the most passing yards in a single season (5,476 in 2011). Lombardi formerly worked as a defensive coach with the Atlanta Falcons before joining the Saints. Prior to joining the NFL, Lombardi coached at Mercyhurst College, Bucknell University, the Virginia Military Institute, and the University of Dayton, among other institutions. During the one-year existence of the XFL, he served as head coach of the New York/New Jersey Hitmen. While entering the United States Air Force Academy, which he graduated in 1994,
Lombardi played tight end and lacrosse in addition to his other sports activities. Lombardi is the grandson of legendary coach Vince Lombardi, who is also a member of the Hall of Fame. He was born in 1971, the year after the death of his grandpa. After winning the Super Bowl in 2010, he was awarded the trophy named after his grandpa, which he received in 2011. In that Super Bowl, the Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts, who were then headed by head coach Jim Caldwell, who subsequently hired Lombardi after becoming the new head coach in Detroit in 2014. Caldwell then hired Lombardi after becoming the new head coach in Detroit in 2014.
