Joe Fryer is an American journalist who currently works for NBC News as a west coast correspondent based at the NBC News West Coast Bureau in Universal City, CA. He reports for all platforms of NBC News including Today, NBC Nightly News, and MSNBC. Fryer joined NBC News in 2013 as a part-time correspondent and officially joined NBC News as a full-time correspondent on October 21, 2013.
Prior to joining NBC News, Fryer worked as a reporter for KING-TV the NBC affiliate in Seattle, Washington. He has also been a reporter for KARE-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota, WTVF-TV in Nashville, Tennessee, WBAY-TV, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky.

And that’s what got the ball rolling, paving the way for him to share his truth with his family.
Fortunately, Joe has rarely experienced a negative reaction in his lifetime. At least one that he has witnessed. And for that, he is so grateful.
Recently, Joe did a story on Nathan Ivie, a Utah County commissioner. He’s Mormon, Republican, and represents one of the most conservatives regions of his state. He was married to a woman and has two kids but says he was living a lie. Earlier in 2019, at age 40, he came out. Joe asked him how it feels. “Free,” he said. “If Joe could use any word to describe it, it would be ‘free.’”

In October 2013 Fryer joined NBC News as a West Coast correspondent. He has covered some of the country’s immense stories, including the devastating Oso mudslide, fatal flooding in Colorado, deadly wildfires around San Diego, and the Isla Vista shooting rampage. He has also interviewed numerous prominent figures such as Jay Leno, Ringo Starr, Olivia Newton-John, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Olympian Kerry Walsh-Jennings.

Previously, before he joined the NBC, he worked for KING 5 News in Seattle as a special projects reporter. He focused on both in-depth reports and daily assignments, covering some of the region’s most important stories: the Amanda Knox verdict, the historic vote approving same-sex marriage, and the Skagit County bridge collapse.
