JoAnne Purtan WXYZ Tv
WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) Action News anchor JoAnne Purtan is leaving the station later this month after learning her contract will not be renewed. The nonrenewal is “due to corporate restructuring of the Scripps-owned television stations and cost-cutting initiatives, “Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co. (NYSE: SSP) cut about 3 percent of jobs at its local stations WXYZ and WMYD-TV20 in February and March, Scripps spokeswoman Kari Wethington said Friday in an email to Crain’s. She did not say how many jobs were cut or who else was let go.
Purtan started at WXYZ in 1998, according to the Southfield-based station’s website. She is an Emmy Award-winning reporter who anchors “Action News at Noon” and co-anchors a 4 p.m. newscast, “The Now Detroit.” The Michigan State University graduate was previously a reporter and anchor at WRGB-TV in Albany, N.Y. She is the daughter of Detroit radio legend Dick Purtan.
Scripps reported a net loss of $12 million on net revenue of $865 million for 2017, compared with net income of $59.9 million on revenue of $868 million in 2016. A decline in political revenue due to it being a nonelection year contributed to the dip.WXYZ also recently lost popular anchor Stephen Clark, who retired at the end of February after 16 years with the TV station.
The station is also undergoing turmoil as a sexual harassment lawsuit filed on behalf of a former reporter has resulted in WXYZ taking anchor Malcolm Maddox off the air for the “time being.” The reporter, Tara Edwards, left the station at the end of 2016.
