Richard Hayne is the president and CEO of Urban Outfitters, an apparel store based in the United States. Since 1976, he has served as chairman and president, and since Glen Senk’s retirement in 2012, he has served as CEO. According to the 2008 Forbes 400, a list of the 400 wealthiest Americans by net worth, Hayne is the 262nd richest person in the United States, with a net worth of $1.8 billion. He is one of Pennsylvania’s top 40 wealthiest individuals. He earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Lehigh University in 1969. In 1970, he and his previous wife, Judy Wicks, co-founded Urban Outfitters, Inc.

A year later, in 1971, the couple split. The first shop opened on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus. Urban Outfitters, Free People, Anthropologie, and Terrain are the four brands that the business runs now (newly launched gardening store). Margaret Hayne, Hayne’s current wife, started working at Urban Outfitters in August 1982. He and his wife were chastised for giving $13,000 to then-Senator Rick Santorum until Santorum’s seat was lost to Bob Casey, Jr. in 2006.

They were also chastised when Urban Outfitters quickly withdrew a shirt calling for same-sex marriage in the aftermath of California’s Proposition 8’s victory in 2008. In 2009, the business collaborated with the National Center for Lesbian Rights to create a new shirt supporting marriage equality. Hayne has refrained from expressing his personal opinions on homosexuality.
