As Italians migrated out – to the Bronx, Brooklyn, Long Island, upstate New York, and New Jersey – and Latinos moved in during another wave of immigration in the 1940s and 1950s, the neighbourhood progressively extended to embrace all of East Harlem, including Italian Harlem.
Although Italian Harlem remained into the 1970s in some sections, notably around Pleasant Avenue, the majority of the previous Italian community has since left. The majority of these mostly elderly citizens live around Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, which is located between 114th and 118th Streets.
