The Carolina Panthers’ original owner and a longtime NFL powerhouse, Jerry Richardson, has died at the age of 86. He passed away quietly on Wednesday night at his home in Charlotte, per the team’s statement.
After George Halas, the proprietor of the Chicago Bears, Richardson was the first former NFL player to own a franchise. In 1993, he established the Carolina Panthers, and its inaugural campaign took place in 1995.
He played wide receiver at Wofford before forming the Panthers, where he still holds several records, including the record for the most receiving yards in a single game and the most touchdown receptions in a season and career.
Richardson was well recognized for his benevolence and support of Wofford College. The Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium was erected in his honor in 2017 after he donated more than $250 million to the school.
Also, he made contributions to the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts, which bears his wife’s name and houses the theater and art departments of the university.
Together with his donations to Wofford, he also gave $4.1 million to Limestone College to improve its sporting facilities and pay tribute to his high school coach.
