Jean Faut Achievements: What is Jean Faut’s Pitching Record?

An American starting pitcher who retired after playing in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1946 to 1953, Jean Anna Faut passed away on February 28, 2023.

She weighed 137 lb, stood at 5 ft 4 in (1.63 m), batted right-handed, and threw right-handed. Faut was a member of the South Bend team in 1947, which finished fourth overall with a 57-54 record.

Faut had a strong postseason record, going 1-1 with one save and a 2.37 ERA despite the team losing to Grand Rapids in the first round of the playoffs. Faut was two months pregnant at the time, and she gave birth to her first child, Larry, in March 1948.

In 1948, the league adopted overhand pitching, which was akin to baseball’s rules. Underhand pitchers who had previously used a submarine pitching approach, like Faut, suffered as a result of this transition.

Because they were skilled at throwing the ball overhand and hard, several teams turned to their outfielders as pitchers. Batters had to modify as well because overhand pitches tend to fall while underhand pitches rise.

With the addition of the Chicago Colleens and the Springfield Sallies during the 1948 season, the league increased to ten clubs and was split into Eastern and Western Divisions.
