Jarrod Powell is 50 years old man who was arrested for attacking Yao Pan Ma on April 23, 2021. The victim, Yao Pan Ma, was in a coma for several months.
New York City police informed that he succumbed to his injuries on December 31. The case is now being treated as a homicide following his death.
Public Questions NBC For Not Including Mugshots Of Jarrod Powell
Jarrod Powell mugshots are not released in the media yet. Hence, the public is questioning NBC why they did not include the suspect’s picture in their article. Some claimed that the attacker was a white supremacist as they did not have his photo.
Yao Pan Ma was collecting cans to pay rent in East Harlem on April 23 when he was attacked and seriously injured. According to authorities, a guy attacked him from behind around 8:30 p.m., “causing him to fall to the ground.”
According to surveillance footage published by the New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force, the man has seen head-stomping Ma while on the ground.
The attacker was identified as Jarrod Powell. He is accused of stomping Yao Pan Ma at least six times in the head. The incident is being investigated by the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force, although it is unclear whether Ma was targeted because of his race.
NYC Police Arrested Jarrod Powell For Attacking Yao Pan Ma
NYC Police arrested Jarrod Powell on April 27, four days after the incident. He had at least 33 past run-ins with the authorities dating back to 1988, many for attacks.
He was detained and charged with two counts of felony assault. Felony charges of attempted murder and hate crime were filed against him. On June 22, Powell pled not guilty to these counts during his arraignment hearing.
However, the victim has passed away after being in a coma for several months. As a result, the case has now been deemed a homicide. Thus, following the homicide ruling, it’s probable that Powell’s charges may be upgraded. His next court appearance is set for February 10.
