A professional ice hockey player from Canada named Jared McCann competes for the NHL’s Seattle Kraken.
He participated in youth ice hockey with the Alliance Hockey League’s London Jr. Knights. Later, McCann joined the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s London Nationals.
Erik Gudbranson and a 2016 fifth-round selection were acquired by the Canucks from the Florida Panthers in exchange for McCann on May 25, 2016, along with picks in the second and fourth rounds of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Jim Benning, the general manager of the Canucks, believed his club required a tough defender at the time of the trade, whilst the Panthers believed McCann was a better match for their possession-based style of play than Gudbranson.
Ironically, in 2019 McCann and Gudbranson joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as teammates.
With the Panthers, McCann opened the 2017–18 season with two goals and five points in his first seven games while playing in the bottom six.
