Jane Curtin Wiki: Age, Childhood, and Education

Jane Therese Curtin was born on 6 September 1947, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, the middle child born to John Joseph Curtin and his wife, Mary Constantine. Her cousin is actress and writer Valerie Curtin.

She spent her childhood in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and went to Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. She would receive an associate degree from Elizabeth Seton Junior College, and then enroll at Northeastern University, attending from 1967 to 1968, then dropping out to pursue a comedic career.

Career Beginnings

Jane Curtin started her career in comedy in the late ‘60s. In 1972, she joined the comedy group called The Proposition and performed with them. In 1974, Curtin starred in the off-Broadway play “Pretzels”, which she co-wrote.

Her career took off when she became one of the original cast members of “Saturday Night Live” (“SNL”) from 1975 to 1980., and anchored the popular “Weekend Update” segment, initially paired with Dan Aykroyd from 1976 to 1977, and later with Bill Murray from 1978 to 1980. Her co-stars on SNL also included notable comedians and actors such as John Belushi, Gilda Radner and Chevy Chase, among others. She often played the straight-woman characters, serving as a foil to the zanier personalities on the show. Her chemistry and comedic timing with her co-stars contributed to the success of the sketches and the overall popularity of SNL.

In 1980, Jane took a break from television as she starred in the comedy film “How to Beat the High Cost of Living”, sharing the screen with Susan Saint James and Jessica Lange. The story revolves around three women who plan a heist to reclaim stolen money and so improve their financial situation.

In 1984 Jane secured the role of Allie in the sitcom “Kate & Allie”, which lasted until 1989, and followed the lives of two divorced women who decide to live together and raise their children as a non-traditional family. Curtin’s portrayal of Allie earned her critical acclaim and two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1984 and 1985.

The ’90s

She began the new decade co-starring alongside Stephen Collins in the sitcom “Working It Out”. The series revolves around two divorcees navigating their personal and professional lives. Although the show was short-lived and only ran for 13 episodes, Curtin’s comedic talent and chemistry with Collins were notable.

In 1993, Jane reunited with her former “Saturday Night Live” co-star Dan Aykroyd in the film “Coneheads”. Based on their popular “SNL” characters, the film follows the extraterrestrial Conehead family as they try to adapt to life on Earth. Curtin played the role of Prymaat Conehead, the wife, and mother of the Conehead family.

The Success with “3rd Rock from the Sun”

From 1996 to 2001, Jane played the role of Dr. Mary Albright in the sitcom “3rd Rock from the Sun”. The series focused on a group of aliens who come to Earth and assume human identities. Curtin’s character is a university professor and love interest of the alien character played by John Lithgow, and was a significant highlight in her career. Dr. Albright served as the voice of reason and intellectual grounding amidst the eccentric and often clueless antics of the alien characters. The success of “3rd Rock from the Sun” relied heavily on the chemistry among the cast, which resulted in three SAG Award nominations during its run, and gathered critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including multiple Primetime Emmy Awards.

Continued Success

After the end of the “3rd Rock from the Sun”, Jane successfully continued her career, primarily focusing on television roles. In 2003, she appeared as Mrs Webb in the TV movie “Our Town”; her performance earned her a nomination for the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries, or Television Film.

The following year, Jane starred as Charlene in the TV movie “The Librarian: Quest for the Spear”. The film, part of “The Librarian” film series, follows the adventures of a librarian who becomes a protector of ancient artifacts. Curtin’s portrayal of Charlene, a fellow librarian and ally to the protagonist, added humor and support to the story.

In 2006, Jane took on the role of Suzanne Crumb in the sitcom “Crumbs”. The series focused on a dysfunctional family dealing with various personal and familial issues. Curtin’s character, Suzanne, was the mother of the Crumb family, and her performance showcased her comedic talent and ability to navigate the complexities of family dynamics.

Continuing her role as Charlene, Jane appeared in the TV movie “The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines” in 2006, a sequel to “The Librarian: Quest for the Spear” and continued the librarian’s adventures.

Three years later, Jane played the role of Paul Rudd and Andy Samberg’s mother in the comedy film “I Love You, Man”, which follows the story of a man who embarks on a quest to find the best man for his upcoming wedding.

In 2012, Jane Curtin joined the cast of the television series “Unforgettable” in the role of Dr. Joanne Webster, alongside Poppy Montgomery, Dylan Walsh and James Hiroyuki Liao. The show revolves around a former police detective with a rare condition of hyperthymesia, enabling her to remember every detail of her life. She remained until 2014 for 34 episodes of the acclaimed series.

Then in 2013, Curtin had a small but memorable role as Mrs Mullins in the comedy film “The Heat”. Starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, the film revolves around two mismatched law enforcement officers who team up to take down a drug lord.

In 2020, Jane played Moira in Disney’s film “Godmothered”, alongside Jillian Bell, Isla Fisher, and Santiago Cabrera. Also in 2020, Curtin appeared as Sandy Ryan in the sitcom “United We Fall”, starring alongside Will Sasso, Christina Vidal Mitchell, and Guillermo Díaz, which focused on the challenges faced by a couple raising their two children.

In 2021, Curtin starred as Janet in the comedy film “Queen Bees”, featured a talented cast of veteran actresses including Ellen Burstyn, Ann-Margret and Loretta Devine, which explored the unexpected friendships that develop in a retirement community.

Jane is now working on several projects, including the TV mini-series “The Residence”, which is in production but without premiere date set.

Broadway Career

Jane Curtin has demonstrated her talent on Broadway as well. In 1981, she marked her entry into the world of theater in New York City with her debut on the Great White Way as Miss Proserpine Garnett in the play “Candida”. She continued her Broadway journey as a replacement actress in two other plays, “Love Letters” and “Noises Off”, stepping into roles previously portrayed by other actors, bringing her own unique interpretation to the characters.

In 2002, Curtin was part of the cast of the highly anticipated revival of “Our Town”. This production garnered significant attention due to the return of the legendary actor Paul Newman to the Broadway stage after a lengthy absence.
