Jacob Blake Shooting Incident

At around 5:10 pm on Sunday 23rd evening, police were called due to domestic violence happening at the location. Two women were arguing when Blake decided to break up the fight between them according to multiple witnesses. Footage circulating on social media pages shows Blake walking to his car unarmed as two police officers follow him closely while yelling at him to stop.

As he opens the driver’s side of his car, one officer grabs him by his white t-shirt and shoots him seven times on his back. According to a press release from Kenosha, officers “provided immediate aid to the man,” who was transported via “Flight for Life” to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, WI.

After the incident, a crowd of protestors gathered outside the shooting location and protested over the shooting of another black man. Kenosha County enacted an emergency curfew from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am on Monday. Not long ago in May 2020, George Floyd, a black man who was also killed by the police officers attracted worldwide attention over police brutality in America.

Blake’s shooting has again caused anger among Americans again with celebrities such as Cardi B condemning the act on her social media pages. The state governor for Kenosha tweeted that;

“Tonight, Jacob Blake was shot in the back multiple times, in broad daylight, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Kathy and I join his family, friends, and neighbors in hoping earnestly that he will not succumb to his injuries.

While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country.

“We stand with all those who have and continue to demand justice, equity, and accountability for Black lives in our country—lives like those of George Floyd, of Breonna Taylor, Tony Robinson, Dontre Hamilton, Ernest Lacy, and Sylville Smith.”

Attorney Benjamin Crump told media stations that he had reached out to Blake’s family and confirmed that Blake was with his three sons when the shooting incident happened. He tweeted that,

“They saw a cop shoot their father. They will be traumatized forever. We cannot let officers violate their duty to PROTECT us. Our kids deserve better!!”
