The Braves revealed on Wednesday that they have reinstated right-hander Kirby Yates from the 60-day injured list and picked the contract of top infield prospect Vaughn Grissom from Double-A Mississippi. Atlanta reinstated the first baseman Mike Ford from the 10-day IL, placed him on the 40-man roster, designated him for assignment, and moved outfielder Adam Duvall from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL.
The major concern after this is the relationship Vaughn shares with former baseball player Marquis. Let’s get to know the details.
Is Vaughn Grissom Related To Marquis Grissom?
Vaughn Grissom is recently taking over the baseball world by storm, whereas Marquis Grissom has been a legend in the game since the early 90s.
Vaughn, a 21-year-old rookie selected in the 11th round of the 2019 draft, has advanced quickly through the minor leagues, posting a.363/.408/.516 slash through his first 98 Double-A plate appearances. He has never played above A-ball, but his.312/.404/.487 line in 344 plate appearances in High-A this year deserves to be mentioned as well.
It’s the second time this year that the Braves have aggressively promoted a top prospect straight from Double-A, and it’s simple to think that Michael Harris II’s enormous success may have given the front office the confidence to do it again.
On the other hand, Marquis was an outfielder and pitcher for the baseball team at Florida A&M University. He spent two seasons (1987 and 1988) with the Rattlers, during which time he batted.408.
He hit more triples and scored more runs per game than any other Division I player in 1988. He pitched two full games, kept a.643 batting average, and was voted the Most Outstanding Player of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament that season. 2014 saw his induction into the MEAC Hall of Fame.
However, apart from their connection with baseball, Vaughn and Marquis do not seem to be related. Fans got confused as they shared their last name.
Who Is Vaughn Grissom’s Dad?
As Vaughn Grissom shares his last name with a former baseball player Marquis Grissom, everyone thought they share a dad-son relationship. However, nothing has been confirmed as of now. This thing has neither been addressed by the players nor a reliable source of media.
Marquis married Sharron, and they were residents of Sandy Springs and Fayetteville, Georgia, as of 2015. Micah, D’monte, Tiana, Marquis, Jr., and Gabriella are his five children. The Washington Nationals selected Marquis Jr. in the thirteenth round of the 2022 MLB Draft. Grissom bought homes for his parents and each of his 14 siblings throughout the course of his playing career.
One year after his retirement, Grissom established the Marquis Grissom Baseball Association, a nonprofit organization that sponsors baseball games for disadvantaged children in the Atlanta region.
Antonio, the younger brother of Grissom, played in the Expos and Philadelphia Phillies farm systems.
Vaughn Grissom Wikipedia
Grissom was just promoted to Mississippi after starting the year in High-A Rome. The Braves’ need for a middle infielder and his success in AA may just justify the early call-up, even though it would be an unbelievable leap to the majors.
Grissom is hitting an absurd.364 with three home runs through 24 games with Mississippi, enough for a.924 OPS. Additionally, in 74 games with Rome, he hit.312 with 11 home runs. The 21-year-old shortstop can absolutely rake, and if the Braves want to go on this path, he should be a strong defender at second base.
