McAdams was born Rachel Anne McAdams, the eldest of three children to Sandra (née Gale) and Lance McAdams on November 17, 1978 in Ontario, Canada. Her mother was a nurse while her father worked as a truck driver. She is English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh and grew up in a Protestant household.
As a child, McAdams fell in love with figure skating. Known for her athletic ability, she did not attempt to pursue a career in the field and only competed in regional competitions, winning a handful. She also competed in other sports such as volleyball, badminton, and soccer for her schools. For her elementary education, McAdams attended Myrtle Street Public School and then Central Elgin Collegiate Institute, a public secondary school in St Thomas, Ontario, where she was raised.
During summer vacation, her parents enrolled her in Disney and Shakespeare summer camps, where she began to develop an interest in acting. She also starred in a number of her productions on the school’s stage, notably winning an award for the students’ drama festival.
