Interview: Fran Kelly Asks Penny Wong About AUKUS Information
Labour leader Penny Wong was interviewed by Fran Kelly on Monday, May 17, 2022, following her election campaign.
During the interview broadcasted live, Wong asked Kelly whether she had leaked the AUKUS information. Thus, questioning her integrity in the week of an election with zero evidence.
In the exclusive interview, Kelly talks about how the confidentiality of AUKUS data and how it needed to be kept tight.
The presenter then tells Wong was in the briefing, asking her directly: “Did you leak it?”.
“Well the Prime Minister..says it was because he wanted to keep it in confidence..it needed to be kept tight & within hours of briefing Labor it leaked, I mean you were in that briefing; did you leak it?” asks Fran Kelly.
At first, Wong answered as if she heard a different question. The Labour leader said “Yeah”, however, after a brief pause, she replied, ” Are you kidding?”. Wong was taken aback by the inquiry but later responded that she and her colleagues have maintained confidentiality for many years.
A week ago, Scott Morrison had suggested that Labor may have leaked the AUKUS deal with China had it been briefed sooner.
