A native of Los Angeles, she attended Harvard-Westlake prep school, followed by Columbia University in New York and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Her first step into the entertainment world was appearing in several of her father’s films, including “A Dangerous Woman” (1993) and “Homegrown” (1998).Success: Gyllenhaal won over audiences as Jake Gyllenhaal’s wisecracking sister in the psychological thriller “Donnie Darko” (2001) written and directed by Richard Kelly, but she has since truly come into her own with roles in films such as Steven Shainberg’s “Secretary” (2002) and Christopher Nolan’s billion-dollar blockbuster “The Dark Knight” (2008). Gyllenhaal stirred controversy with statements she made during the promotion of her 2008 film “The Great New Wonderful”. On the subject of the attack on the twin towers, she stated, “It is always useful as individuals or nations to ask how we may have knowingly or unknowingly contributed to this conflict.” She has lent her support to charities such as the WITNESS organization, which documents the effects of human rights violations. She has also lent her star power to opportunities that allow her to pay it forward, such as her support of Trickle Up, an initiative to help poverty-stricken demographics gain the tools to start micro-enterprises. She also acted as the host to the indie Los Angeles fashion show ‘Fashionably Natural’ in 2008.Fun Facts: Gyllenhaal is the descent of royalty. Of the infamous scene between Ledger and Gyllenhaal’s characters, she stated she felt safe with Heath as it takes ‘enormous restraint’ to be in control of one’s craft as an actor, and that Heath often would wisecrack and tell jokes between takes.
