Ibrahim Babangida is a Nigerian statesman who served as military President of Nigeria from 1985 to 1993.
Babangida as an army general also served as the Chief of Army Staff from January 1984 to August 1985.
He was born on August 17, 1941, in Minna a city in Middle Belt Nigeria to his father, Muhammad Babangida, and mother Aisha Babangida.
As a Muslim, he received an early Islamic education before attending primary school and subsequently Government College, in Bida, Nigeria.
He rose through the rank and file of the Nigerian military and have also been to war on some occasions until he became president through a coup.
Babangida was married to Maryam Babangida from 1969 until her death in 2009. They had four children together.
Rumours had it that the former military president was dead after he was not seen in the country for some time. Babangida, however, granted a phone interview from Germany saying he is alive, hail and hearty.
