How to write an email about missing class

Dear [Teacher’s name], Please accept my apology for missing the [subject] class on [date]. I can’t give a valid reason for cutting class, although I [give the reason]. This was a reckless decision, and I highly regret my action.

State that you’re going to miss class.

For example, you might write: “I am emailing you to let you know that I will not be in class on Monday, December 17th.” It’s unnecessary to apologize for your absence here, though you can add an apology (e.g., “I’m sorry in advance, but”) if you like.

The most common valid excuses are: Illness or quarantine, medical or dental appointment, funeral attendance, Religious holiday or ceremony, or court appeal.

Currently, students can miss class because of a mental illness, but it is considered an unexcused absence because it’s not on the list of permissible absences. An appointment with a therapist or counselor would not be required to list a “mental health” absence as a valid reason to miss school.

This means many children experience mental health problems such as anxiety and depression as barriers stopping them attending school, but their absences are marked as unauthorised; leaving children unsupported by their schools, and leaving their parents at risk of fines and prosecution for non-attendance.

Online learning gives students the freedom to work on their own time, at their own pace. For students with social anxiety who struggle doing simple tasks, this is especially helpful because they can slow down without feeling like they’re trailing behind their classmates.

It is okay to miss a day of school and nobody is going to arrest you and you probably aren’t going to get detention. Make sure you get the homework/notes from a friend after school, be honest with your mom about what happened and in the end, all that will have happened is you missed a day of school.

Technically, there are no laws that state a parent can be arrested and jailed for their child missing school. However, there are several cases of parents facing very serious legal consequences for their child’s truancy, for not following or complying with the requirements or punitive measures put in place.

Myth #2: Missing a few days is no big deal. It doesn’t take many absences to have an effect on a student’s grades or potential to graduate. According to Attendance Works, missing just two days a month—18 days a school year—can drastically affect a student’s academic success.

3 days is really not a huge deal. I mean, it will affect you since they by default mark you as unexcused if you don’t have a formal reason to be absent, and depending on the school, you may face a consequence to your grade and/or be forced to attend detention.

Definition of a Truant

The California Legislature defined a truant in very precise language. In summary, it states that a student missing more than 30 minutes of instruction without an excuse three times during the school year must be classified as a truant and reported to the proper school authority.

Chronic absenteeism means missing too much school—for any reason—excused or unexcused. Experts and a growing number of states define chronic absenteeism as missing 10% (or around 18 days) during a school year).
