More about Live KTN Kenya and Online TV
KTN is a commercial television station headquartered in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Founded by Jared Kangwana, the station started broadcasting on the UHF channel as a pilot project for a 24-hour subscription TV service in and around Nairobi. The KTN Kenya is one of the two channels of the television network. The other channel is KTN News.
KTN Kenya began airing shortly after establishing itself and soon became famous for undiluted real and raw journalism in the 1990s. Despite some challenges, the TV station faced the loss of part of the KTN staff and political interference in its reporting from the armed forces. It has evolved and branded itself into a more sophisticated and aggressive broadcaster with authoritative and independent news delivery. It has also proven competent in competing internationally with other media companies.
The television channel was closely watched and monitored by governments in Africa and beyond to see how it would affect society. Until now, many of the new radio and TV stations in East and Central Africa rely on KTN to get news from the region. Some of KTN’s former employees are even recruited by these stations to support their operations.
There is no doubt about the role played by KTN in the African news network; As the first free privately owned television station in Africa, the station has left much to learn for other African television and media groups. At a time when it was customary for African television channels not to start newscasts without first covering all events involving the President and Head of State, KTN broke that curse, which other channels on the continent considered a bold act journalism and began changing the way they reported it to make it less patronizing.
During the early periods of Kenya television, the channel offered a combination of relayed retransmissions of Cable News (CNN), MTV, European, American and Australian programs and filled the remaining slots with programs being developed in other African states. At the same time, KTN also submitted news for use by affiliated foreign broadcasters, allowing the station’s reporters to simultaneously serve as foreign correspondents and news sources for CNN World Report, BBC and VOA.
