How to wash pink shirts

It’s very important to wash your lights and darks separately, as darker dyes can ruin lighter fabrics. Sort your greys, blacks, navies, reds, dark purples and similar colours into one load, and your pinks, lavenders, light blues, lights greens and yellows into another laundry.

Lighter colors wash well together, as there is little to no pigment in the clothing. We’ve all heard the age old mistake of one red sock going into the white wash and ending up with pink undies and pink shirts, so try to avoid doing anything like this!

The next time you open your washing machine and discover that you mistakenly dyed everything pink, remove the colored article(s) and rewash the white clothes with detergent and non-chlorine bleach or a cup of white distilled vinegar.

To help keep dyes from bleeding, select detergent without boosters or bleach alternatives, use the shortest wash cycle possible and opt for cold water. Heat can stress and fade dark fabric, so use the lowest dryer cycle heat setting and remove your clothes as soon as they are finished.

Grey is considered a dark colour when doing laundry. As you know, your washing should be split into colour groups. Your white should have a pile, your lighter colours should and so too should your darks.

Use hot water for light–colored items that are especially dirty or smelly. Use cold water for dark clothes (especially new ones) whose colors are more likely to run. Cotton items also require cold water to avoid shrinkage. You’ll also see settings for load size, usually small, medium or large.

In the case of a larger load made up of color groups, then these can be tackled in separate laundry loads, where bright clothes, such as purples, reds, oranges and bright yellows can be washed together and bright blues and greens can also be washed together in a different batch.

60°C is the perfect temperature for killing bacteria, viruses and removing stains. This wash setting is also highly recommended for washing towels and bedding, but obviously this setting is going to increase running costs as the higher the temperature the higher the cost.

What temperature kills bacteria in the washing machine? When it comes to washing heavily soiled garments, towels, or bedding, you will need to wash at a higher temperature, ideally above 40°C or even above 60°C. Higher temperatures kill off germs and remove mould more effectively.

Washing your clothes at 40 degrees may be better for the environment but it does not kill the majority of bacteria, new research shows. Microbiologists also found that one in four items of laundry that have been washed at 40 degrees contain traces of bacteria linked to faeces.

To kill the germs in your laundry, wash your clothes on the hot cycle, then put everything in the dryer for 45 minutes. Wash whites with bleach, and use peroxide or color-safe bleach for colors. Do your laundry in water that’s at least 140 F to kill any viruses or bacteria.

White vinegar has an ingredient known as acetic acid, which can kill viruses and bacteria so they can be easily washed away during the cleaning cycle. A half cup of white vinegar can act as a disinfectant and a deodorizer—removing those pesky germs and working to soften your fabrics.

The bleach will remove up to 99.9% of germs and bacteria. It’s also a great idea to make sure your washing machine gets a good clean every few washes to prevent further spreading of illnesses.

To sanitize your clothes washer, you can run a clean-out cycle while the washer is empty. If your washer doesn’t have a specific clean-out cycle, you may perform this function manually. Remember: do not put laundry in the washer. Use hot water.

Using Vinegar to Disinfect Laundry

Vinegar has acetic acid, which can eliminate viruses and bacteria. For a bit of added disinfectant and deodorizer in your clothes, you can add ½ cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Not only will this help to eliminate those pesky germs, but it also works as a fabric softener.
