How to travel without checked luggage

No Baggage Fee Airlines

As far as U.S. airlines go, only two permit their passengers to check bags for free. These are Cape Air and Southwest Airlines. Cape Air offers free carry-on, gate checked and checked bags on the airline’s Cessna 402C air crafts for domestic flights, excluding trips to the Caribbean.

More and more airlines are charging higher bag fees if you pay them at the airport, as opposed to paying them in advance on the airline’s website. For this reason, we always recommend you checking the airline web site in advance of your flight to see if you can prepay your bag fees.

Checked Luggage

The most common maximum size bag allowed is 62 linear (total) inches. A common size bag for checking through is: 27″ x 21″ x 14″. Airline carriers will allow overweight, oversize or additional baggage for additional fees.

When overhead bins fill up, travelers with carry-ons that don’t fit under the seat will be asked to gate check their bag. Gate checking is always free of charge, and basically means your carry-on will be put into the cargo hold with all the other checked luggage.

Depending on your needs, you should expect to pay about 50 USD for a budget suitcase, about 100 USD for a mid-tier suitcase, and over 200 USD for a premium suitcase. For most people, the mid-tier suitcase that will cost around 100 dollars will meet or exceed their needs.

Hard-Sided Luggage

ABS is the lightest, but polycarbonate is more durable. You may want to buy hard-sided luggage if you’ll be packing breakable items. It may offer better security than soft-sided baggage because it can’t be ripped open as easily and usually has integrated locks.
