How to start eating organic

1 – Antioxidant Impact of Organic Food

A study conducted by The Organic Center showed organic foods supply higher levels of antioxidants, which have a more positive impact on our bodies than those from non-organic foods.

Forgo Fresh for Frozen Produce

You don’t have to buy fresh food to eat organic. “Another more budget-friendly strategy is to seek out frozen organic fruits and vegetables that tend to be priced favorably,” Everett says.

Reasons against buying organic food

Organic food may go ‘off’ more quickly than non-organic produce. Organic food is more expensive to buy than non-organic food. Many people believe that organic food does not allow the use of any chemicals.

According to an annual summary of pesticide data, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed that a whopping 21 percent of organic samples tested contained pesticide residue.

Compared with conventionally grown produce, organically grown produce has lower detectable levels of pesticide residue. The difference in health outcomes is unclear because of safety regulations for maximum levels of residue allowed on conventional produce.

The Clean Fifteen™EWG’s Clean Fifteen™ list of produce least likely to hold pesticide residues consists of avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, cabbage, frozen sweet peas, onions, asparagus, mangoes, papayas, kiwis, eggplant, grapefruit, cantaloupe, cauliflower and sweet potatoes.

Avocados are one of the safest fruits to buy non-organic because their thick outer skin prevents pesticides from touching the edible fruit. Also known as alligator pears, they are packed with essential nutrients such as folate, potassium and vitamins K, B-6, E and C.

Organic foods are just better for you. Ongoing studies have shown a connection between pesticides in foods and their nutrient content. You guessed it–organic foods rate higher. But organic is not only better for your health, it’s also better for the planet.

Lots of people prefer to buy organic eggs simply because the hens aren’t confined to cages, have access to the outdoors and are fed organic feed. It’s a personal decision. For any dish that needs an extra-fluffy texture, though, I would splurge on the organic dozen.

The USDA did not exclude blueberries as it usually makes the dirty dozen list, since more than 50 pesticides have been detected as residue on them. Frozen blueberries have proved somewhat less contaminated.

Coffee beans are among the most highly sprayed and chemically treated crops in the world. Crops are steeped in synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. Coffee-growing countries each have their own monitoring systems and limits for pesticide use.

Kale Is One of the Most Contaminated Vegetables You Can Buy. Here’s Why. Each year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes its Dirty Dozen list, which ranks the 12 pieces of produce that contain the highest amounts of pesticide residues.
