Herd behavior occurs in animals in herds, packs, bird flocks, fish schools and so on, as well as in humans. Demonstrations, riots, general strikes, sporting events, religious gatherings, everyday decision-making, judgement and opinion-forming, are all forms of human based herd behavior.

Herd mentality is very dangerous for a young, growing mind and/or a very impressionable type of person. It teaches people to follow the crowd, and not think for themselves. In large crowds of 200 or more, 5% of the group is enough to influence the direction in which it travels.

Herd mentality can actually be a GREAT thing if you let it be. Michael Bond, author of The Power of Others: Peer Pressure, Groupthink, and How the People Around Us Shape Everything We Do, wrote that herd mentality can actually “change the course of history.”

Many observers see these stock market trends as examples of herding behavior because individuals are driven by emotion rather than reason to “join the crowd”; greed drives mass buying frenzies, and fear drives crashes. A more obvious example of human herd behavior occurs in dense public crowds or mobs.

In behavioral finance, herd mentality bias refers to investors’ tendency to follow and copy what other investors are doing. They are largely influenced by emotion and instinct, rather than by their own independent analysis. It focuses on the fact that investors are not always rational.

Reasons for the occurrence of Herd Mentality

By nature, we are always built to be a part of society. Though we possess unique qualities, we try to blend in with the crowd and find it highly difficult to go against it. While trading in the markets, this behavior might pop up, affecting our decision.

A Benefit of a Herd: Increased Vigilance

In fact, not all members of the herd are equally attentive, which is one of the advantages of this social grouping. The researchers clarified that the individuals at the perimeter of herds are more vigilant than those in the center.

When individuals are affected by mob mentality, they may make different decisions than they would have individually. Social psychologists study the related topics of group intelligence, crowd wisdom, groupthink, deindividuation, and decentralized decision making.

Fear: It makes animals run in herds. Could it also cause otherwise thoughtful people to stop thinking for themselves and follow the crowd? It comes from a part of the brain that’s called the amygdala, the seat of the fear response.

Herd behavior suggests that there are limits to human beings’ free will. The actions of a large group can greatly influence an individual’s decisions.

Herd. The name Nietzsche often gives to the common, mediocre masses. He sees them as herd animals, lacking any individual will and living by group instincts. Nietzsche often speaks of “herd morality” as the democratic will to render everyone equal in mediocrity.

We are responsible for ourselves

We need to take full responsibility of our lives: We are responsible to ourselves for our own existence; we want to be the true helmsman of this existence and refuse to allow our existence to resemble a mindless act of chance.

Nihilism is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. It is often associated with extreme pessimism and a radical skepticism that condemns existence. A true nihilist would believe in nothing, have no loyalties, and no purpose other than, perhaps, an impulse to destroy.
