How to quote a summary mla

In MLA style, when you cite a summary of a work, you should generally mention the name of the work you are summarizing and its author in your prose and include the work in your works-cited list. The author’s name in your prose will direct the reader to the works-cited-list entry.

A summary is written in your own words.

It contains few or no quotes.

Paraphrasing. When you write information or ideas from a source in your own words, cite the source by adding an in-text citation at the end of the paraphrased portion, like this: This is a paraphrase (Smith 8). This is a paraphrase (“Trouble” 22).

Sometimes you only need to paraphrase the information from one sentence. Here are some examples of paraphrasing individual sentences: Original: Her life spanned years of incredible change for women as they gained more rights than ever before. Paraphrase: She lived through the exciting era of women’s liberation.

Long quotations

For quotations that are more than four lines of prose or three lines of verse, place quotations in a free-standing block of text and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, with the entire quote indented 1/2 inch from the left margin while maintaining double-spacing.

Long quotations

Place direct quotations that are 40 words or longer in a free-standing block of typewritten lines and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, indented 1/2 inch from the left margin, i.e., in the same place you would begin a new paragraph.

Cite web postings as you would a standard web entry. Provide the author of the work, the title of the posting in quotation marks, the web site name in italics, the publisher, and the posting date. Follow with the date of access. Include screen names as author names when author name is not known.

Author Last Name, First Name. “Title of Web Page in Title Case.” Name of Website, Day Month Year of publication, URL. Accessed Day Month Year. Place a parenthetical citation after referencing the website in your text.

Cite web pages in text as you would any other source, using the author and date if known. Keep in mind that the author may be an organization rather than a person. For sources with no author, use the title in place of an author. For sources with no date use n.d. (for no date) in place of the year: (Smith, n.d.).

Citation Guide: How to cite WEBSITES

Provide the website name (without italics) in the source element. Include a period after the website name, followed by the URL. When the author of the work is the same as the website name, omit the site name from the source element to avoid repetition.

When you use a quotation mid–sentence, end the quote with quotation marks and cite the source in parentheses immediately after, and continue the sentence. If the author’s name and the date of publication are included before the quotation, then provide only the page numbers immediately after the quotation.

Simply type your sentence in your own words, highlight the words you want to make “clickable,” click on the chain (hyperlink) symbol in the RCE, and insert the URL (web address). Remember to click Save to save your work.

In order for a sentence to be grammatically correct, the subject and verb must both be singular or plural. In other words, the subject and verb must agree with one another in their tense. If the subject is in plural form, the verb should also be in plur al form (and vice versa).

To include a link in any text message, just type or paste the full URL into your message. Most messaging platforms will automatically turn the URL into a link that allows recipients of the message to click and access the linked page or content.
