How to pronounce solder

Is it pronounced solder or sodder?

I have noticed that also without exception those based in the USA and Canada pronounce the word solder as sodder, whereas we BrE speakers would invariably sound the L in both the noun and the verb solder.

How do the British pronounce solder?

Why do Americans say solder without the L?

“Solder” is a modern spelling of the Middle English “souder”, which derives from the Old French “soudeur”, which itself comes from the Latin “solidare”. Regarding the dropping of the “l” from the original Latin, that was common in Old French, and is why we say, for example, the word “powder” instead of “pulder”.

How do you pronounce soldering iron?

Why is the L silent in TALK?

In walk, chalk, and talk, the L comes after an A, and the vowel is pronounced like a short O. Half and calf have an AL, too, but the vowel is pronounced like the short A in staff. In could, should, and would, the L comes after OU, and the sound is exactly like the OO in good.

Why is L silent in salmon?

From Latin salmo via Norman French came samoun or samon (in modern French it’s saumon – still without an L). The name may mean “the one making saults”. The silent letter was later added again, like in other English words derived from Latin (like the S in island). Hence, the L in the English word “salmon” is silent.

Is the L silent in Almond?

A: The “l” in “almond” was silent until very recently. More recent standard dictionaries say we can now properly pronounce “almond” either with or without the “l” sound.

Is it wrong to pronounce the l in salmon?

Apparently, salmon, that word comes to us with French influence and the letter ‘l‘ is not pronounced. It actually modifies the sound of the letter ‘a’.

Is the L in yolk silent?

This was later added for the spelling to make it more similar to the Latin root (salmo, where the ‘l‘ is pronounced), however pronunciation didn’t change. That said, the ‘l’ in ‘yolk‘ is also silent, unless this isn’t the case in some American dialects I have never heard.

Why is yolk spelled?

Yolk comes from the Old English ‘geolca, geoloca’ which means ‘the yellow part’ and in turn comes from ‘geolu’ which means ‘yellow’. The word used to be spelt ‘yelk’.

Do we pronounce the L in already?

Re: Already (pronunciation)

There is no allophone of /l/ in the word.
