Can you sound out kanji?
Kanji isn’t phonetic, like English, where you can put together English letters to make a word based on the sounds each letter makes.
What do kanji mean?
Kanji (漢字, pronounced [kaɲdʑi] ( listen)) are the adopted logographic Chinese characters that are used in the Japanese writing system. They are used alongside the Japanese syllabic scripts hiragana and katakana. The Japanese term kanji for the Chinese characters literally means “Han characters”.
How many pronunciations of kanji are there?
い(に)、おおー are common-but-not-as-common readings. All of the rest are either used in names, obscure, or otherwise not really worth bothering with. Even the above short list can be simplified to just たい (w/wo dakuten) and おお. Worry less about stuff like knowing the 4 types of on’yomi or all 18 pronunciations of a kanji.
