How do you pronounce Chalazion of the eye?
noun, plural cha·la·zi·a [kuh-ley-zee-uh].
How does a chalazion heal?
Most chalazions require minimal medical treatment and clear up on their own in a few weeks to a month. Apply warm compresses to the eyelid for 10 to 15 minutes, 4 to 6 times a day for several days. The warm compresses may help soften the hardened oil that is blocking the ducts and allow drainage and healing.
What causes a chalazion?
Chalazia may develop when something blocks a small oil gland in the eyelid. These glands help keep the eye moist. A blocked gland begins retaining oil and swells. Eventually, the fluid will drain, and you may have a hard lump on your eyelid.
What is the difference between a stye and a chalazion?
A stye is an infection that causes a tender red lump on the eyelid. Most styes occur along the edge of the eyelid. When a stye occurs inside the eyelid, it is called an internal hordeolum (say “hor-dee-OH-lum”). A chalazion (say “kuh-LAY-zee-on”) is a lump in the eyelid.
What happens if a chalazion is left untreated?
Untreated chalazia occasionally drain spontaneously but are more likely to persist with intermittent acute inflammation compared to treated chalazia. When untreated, new lesions often develop, and inadequate drainage may result in local recurrences, especially if a predisposing skin condition is present.
Do Chalazions pop?
Often, the blocked gland becomes inflamed or infected. This then leads to swelling of the meibomian gland, called a chalazion or meibomian cyst. Sometimes, the cyst (if left alone) can discharge or burst spontaneously through the skin of the eyelid, or through the inner lining of the eyelid. However, this is rare.
