How to install wood decking

What is the correct way to lay decking boards?

However, every decking timber manufacturer will tell you: the proper way to install a board is ridge side down. The ridges, they say, were designed to let air circulate underneath the boards. This, according to them, prevents the buildup of moisture and, consequently, of mould.

Should deck boards be staggered?

Give It a Dry Run and Stagger the Boards

If your deck dimensions are longer than your decking boards, staggering the joints is important when laying decking boards. The staggered boards improve stability and the appearance of the deck.

Which side of deck board goes down?

Do you screw deck boards to every joist?

“Bark side down” orients the board so the end grain growth rings curve upward. This creates a crowning warp when wet. As a result, water is shed from the board, as opposed to pooling on it. Also, the exposed board face is heartwood (closer to the tree’s center) versus sapwood, and heartwood is more decay-resistant.

Is it better to nail or screw a deck?

Should you use screws or nails for a deck?

Each deck board should be fastened with two screws at each point where the board crosses a joist to ensure the stability and durability of your deck’s surface. Boards should be fastened to rim joists with three screws.

Should I pre drill holes for deck screws?

For the decking boards, many agree that screws perform better than nails. They have better tensile strength and will less likely to pop out, which is a common problem in decking. Many also agree that nails are better used for the frame of the deck.

What screws are best for decking?

For a deck build it’s best to use a combination of nails and screws. Screws are superior for laying down the decking. They hold things flush better and have a better fastener/tensile strength, which keeps boards from popping up over time.

What screws should I use for decking?

While it is not considered necessary to pre–drill wood screws, it is highly recommended by professionals that you do so. When you do not drill pilot holes in advance, you are essentially putting extra pressure on the wood surrounding the screw (weakening it) and increasing the chances of the wood splitting or breaking.

Can you make a pilot hole without a drill?

Decking screws are often made from stainless steel or coated in ceramic, which prevents straining of the timber on exterior wooden structures. Other materials ideal for deck fasteners include galvanized plated zinc and metals high in copper.

What can I use if I don’t have a drill?

An 8 gauge, 2.5” coated deck screw is most commonly used when fastening deck boards to joists. For deck framing, structural wood screws such as Simpson SDS 1.5” screws work with joist and stringer hangers, as well as post/beam brackets.

What can I use if I don’t have a drill bit?

You can do this by using a hammer and a small nail in creating a small hole in the wood. This pilot hole can facilitate the screwing process, especially, if you are working on a hardwood. It helps you keep the screw in place and in a straight position.

Can you screw into wood without a drill?

Use two wooden sticks – tie a strong piece of string on both ends of one to serve as a bow, and the other should have a sharp end on one side and a handle on the other. Scrape out a small hole in the wood, where you wish to drill your hole. Place the pointy end of your second stick there and apply pressure.
