How to install deck joist blocking

Where do you place blocks for deck joists?

Install blocking or bridging between joists at mid-span to reduce bounce. Install blocking along the perimeter rim joists to strengthen guardrails. Blocking the joists at mid span. Snap a chalk line across the center of your joists to lay out your bridging.

How far apart should deck blocks be?

The blocks should be spaced to make a 7′ x 19′ rectangle, leaving about 6 inches from each block for deck boards to add another 8′ x 20′ rectangle. Using a string level or laser level, make sure each block is level.

Can you use screws for joist blocking?

Nails may eventually lead to the floor squeaking as they are worked slightly loose over time. Nails are much stronger in shear strength while screws are stronger against pull out. If the bridging is to keep joists from twisting, then screws would be better. If bridging is for hanging something, nails would be better.

Do you need blocking between deck joists?

Blocking, according to the building code, is required at the open end between joists to prevent rotation or at 8-foot maximums if the joists are greater than 2×12 in dimensions. Most builders, though, recognize that blocking every 4 to 6 feet unifies the frame and improves structural strength.

Do I need blocking for deck joists?

According to National Design Specifications (NDS) blocking is required on any deck joist over 8ft long on 2″x 10″ and 2″ x 12″ material. We would recommend blocking on any deck joists greater than 2″ x 6″.

Can I use 2×6 for deck joists?

2×6 joists should only be used on ground-level decks that do not require, and will not provide for, any guards. Most decking is not strong enough to support longer spans than 16″. Some builders reduce joist spacing to 12″ on center to strengthen the deck frame or to increase maximum allowable joist spans.

How do you stiffen deck joists?

To stiffen the deck, go underneath and install a row of 2×8 blocks down the center, perpendicular to the joists. Stagger them with enough room to nail or screw them in place through the end grain, then fasten the treated 2x4s to the underside of the joists so they run from corner to corner, forming an X.

How far can a 2×6 span without support?

A 2×6 can support up to 50 pounds per square foot of weight without sagging with a maximum span of about 12 feet when spanning a distance horizontally, with the 2×6 standing in a vertical position.

How far can you span a 2×6 ceiling joist?

For example, the highlighted cell (below) shows that a 2″ x 6″ Southern Yellow Pine joist, with a grade of #2, and spaced 24″ apart can have a maximum span of 10 feet – 0 inches (10-0), if you are designing your structure to support a plaster ceiling.

How much weight can a 2×6 ceiling joist hold?

Fine Homebuilding notes that 2-inch by 6-inch garage joists will support a weight of up to 50 pounds per square foot. If you overload your garage’s ceiling joists, the ceiling may appear to sag from the strain. While your 2-inch by 6-inch joists can collapse from too much weight, such a scenario is uncommon.

How far can a 2×6 span on a pergola?

You also have to consider allowable span, based on the size of the pergola you’re building. A 12-foot span is much too long for a 2×6 board, for example. Not only will it look weak to the eye, but it will sag over time. Most builders use a minimum of 2×8 for the upper framing members, and that’s for a small pergola.

How far can a 2×8 span without support?

Span is determined by species, grade, dimensions, spacing, use, and load. A rule of thumb is 1.5 times a joist’s depth but in feet when spaced at 16” centers. In general, a 2×8 will span 1.5 x 8, so 12-feet.

What is the best height for a pergola?

The minimum height of a pergola should be no lower than 7’6” to provide enough head room, though most projects call for a range of 8-10′ in height. A lower ceiling feels right-sized for intimate gatherings, while a larger roof is more in scale with a larger structure.

What is the best wood to build a pergola?

Western Red Cedar and Redwood are the two most commonly used woods for pergolas, aside from pressure-treated wood. Western Red Cedar (WRC) and Redwood are both naturally stunning woods and often lumped together.
