How to install a picket fence

How do you install wood picket fence panels?

How do you install a fence yourself?

Should fence pickets touch the ground?

When building a wood fence, be sure to plan for a space between the pickets and the ground. In most applications, a wood fence should be installed at least two inches off the ground. Wood pickets should never touch it.

Should I use concrete for fence posts?

Concrete is the most secure material for setting fence posts, especially if you have sandy soil. Using premixed concrete rather than dry concrete will ensure ultimate security. While concrete is sturdy, it lacks the drainage of gravel and can trap moisture, ultimately leading to rot.

Do wood fence posts need concrete?

First rule, gang: Do not set wooden posts in concrete. Look, no matter what preventative steps you take (and I’ll get to those), eventually wooden posts rot, and eventually you’ll have to set new ones. Not only does burying them in concrete make for more work down the line, it actually can speed up the rotting.

Will fence posts rot in concrete?

Simply setting the posts in concrete does create a condition that will accelerate rot in the bottom of the posts. With pressure-treated posts, the rot will be slow. This allows any moisture that gets between the concrete and the bottom of the post to percolate through the gravel and away from the bottom of the post.

Do I need gravel under concrete?

You do need gravel under a concrete slab, footing, or patio. Gravel provides a solid foundation for your concrete as it can be compacted. It also improves drainage, preventing water from pooling beneath the concrete.

Is 2 feet deep enough for fence posts?

The minimum depth that you should dig your fence post holes for panel sections is 2 feet. A general formula is to dig the holes one-third to one-half of the post’s aboveground height. The deeper you dig the holes, the more stability your fence has, but you must also purchase longer posts.

How many bags of concrete do I need for a fence post?

Most fence post holes will need between 1 – 4 bags of concrete to securely hold the post in place. The best way to determine the size of the hole is: Diameter of the hole is 3 times the width of the fence post.

Is 2 feet deep enough for a 6-foot fence?

As a general rule of thumb, you’ll need to place at least 1/3 the height of the post in the ground. For example, a 6–foot tall fence will need at least 2 feet of post in the ground. Consider the frost line in your area. The frost line (also called frost depth) varies from region to region.

Should I use 4×4 or 6×6 fence posts?

4×4 is perfect for these very standard fence dimensions. Normally 4×6 or 6×6 are needed for gates or extreme wind loads.

What size posts do I need for a 6ft fence?

If you’re setting wooden or concrete posts in concrete you’ll need 8ft (2.4m) posts for a 6ft (1.828m) fence – i.e. your posts are 2ft (0.6m) longer than the fence height. Use 4in x 4in posts for fences of 5ft and over and 3in x 3in posts for anything under 5ft.

What size Post do you use for a fence?

Fence Post Types

Wood Posts – For use as corner posts, it’s recommended to use a wood post at least 8 feet in length. Set 24 inches to 48 inches in the ground for best results and more than 48 inches in sandy or rocky soil.

How often do you put fence posts?

Typically, fence posts are spaced between six and eight feet apart. The corner posts are set first. To align all of the posts in between, stretch a line from each corner post to work as your guide.

What is the maximum distance between fence posts?

Most fence posts can be spaced 8 to 12 feet apart. While this is a general criteria, it doesn’t cover all scenarios. For instance, high tensile fence can have larger spacing, requiring line posts every 15 to 20 feet for field fence styles, and as much as 20-30 feet for high tensile barbed and smooth wire.

How much space should be between post and gate?

For gates with standard 2×4 framing and 4×4 posts, leave a 1/2- to 3/4-inch space between the latch post and the gate frame. On the hinge side, it will depend on the hardware you use. About 1/4 inch is usually sufficient.
