How to install a home thermostat

Can I install a new thermostat myself?

It is possible to save some money by installing or replacing your thermostat yourself, but you will need: Basic electrical knowledge. A general understanding of the type of equipment being used.

Is it hard to replace a thermostat?

But after a bit of research, I discovered that replacing a thermostat is pretty stinking easy. Granted, each heating and air conditioning system will have unique requirements for connecting a new thermostat, but the general process is pretty much the same. Consider this your big picture guide through the process.

Is installing a thermostat easy?

To install a programmable thermostat, you don’t need to be an expert handyman. Even a novice can easily complete the project using the instructions below.

How do you install a thermostat?

How much does it cost to install a thermostat?

For a standard, 2,000-square-foot home, the cost of installing or replacing a thermostat averages between $112 and $255, including the price of the unit and professional installation. The national average cost is $175. The thermostat will run between $15 and $300, depending on the type and its features.

What happens if you install a thermostat backwards?

If you installed the thermostat backwards, it would probably not open up enough to allow coolant to flow, and the temp gauge would shoot up into the far right range, the engine would overheat, etc.

Which side of the thermostat goes in the motor?

The shorter end (Arrow B) of the thermostat always points toward the radiator hose, and away from the engine. Therefore, the deep end (Arrow C) of the thermostat always gets installed going towards, or into, the engine.

What are the symptoms of a bad thermostat?

  • Leakage from the mounting surface. Appearance: Seepage, drips or large coolant bleed marks on or around the mounting surface or on the housing.
  • Rust and corrosion. Appearance: Rust and corrosion on the surfaces of the thermostat.
  • Deposit build-up.
  • Map-controlled thermostats.

Where does coolant go when thermostat is closed?

When the thermostat is closed, it prevents coolant from leaving the engine and circulating through the radiator until the correct running temperature is reached. The correct running temperature for most engines is between 180 degrees F and 200 degrees F.

Can you unstick a car thermostat?

Take the temperature of the upper radiator hose.

Pull the trigger on the thermometer to take the temperature of the hose. The temperature for the radiator hose should be lower than the temperature of the engine. If they are the same, then the thermostat is stuck in the open position.

How do I know if my coolant isn’t circulating?

After your engine is warm, feel the radiator near the bottom. If it’s still cool but the top part of it is hot, you’re not circulating coolant. That could also mean a stuck thermostat though.

How do I know if my coolant is circulating?

Start your car’s engine and allow it to idle. Look through the radiator filler neck to see if the coolant flows. At this time, it should not be flowing as your car has not reached the operating temperature to cause the thermostat to open. If you find the coolant is flowing, it means the thermostat valve is open.

What causes thermostat to stick?

If something goes awry in your engine, then it’s possible your thermostat can get stuck in the open position. This could be caused by some kind of build-up of debris, grease, dirt, or some kind of corrosion that prevents it from closing properly.

Will a car overheat with just water?

Running just water in your car’s radiator will guarantee overheating and damage, including to your cylinder heads and engine block. A 50/50 mix of coolant and water also lowers the freezing temperature and raises the boiling point of the water in your car’s radiator.

How can you tell if your water pump is going bad?

Appearance: With the engine off, check the condition of the bearing by looking for any side-to-side play at the shaft. Apply hand pressure – there should be no play at all. Also, rumbling or screeching noises coming from the water pump indicate a worn bearing.
