Corn is a tender, warm-season annual that is best planted after the soil temperature reaches 60°F (16°C), usually 2 or 3 weeks after the last frost in spring. Corn requires 60 to 100 frost-free days to reach harvest depending upon variety and the amount of heat during the growing season.

How long does it take to grow corn?

Corn typically requires 90 to 120 Growing Degree Days (GDD) from planting to emergence.

Is corn easy to grow?

Corn is extremely easy to grow provided you have enough space. You will need a minimum 10-foot by 10-foot area to ensure proper pollination. The larger your garden, the better and more uniform your corn harvest will be.

Can you grow corn from store bought corn?

You can plant corn seeds from the packets of garden seeds section of the grocery, and they will grow.

Should you soak corn seeds before planting?

Corn has deep roots, so you need to water long enough that water reaches a depth of 30–36 inches. Because corn benefits from deep, soaking watering, it’s best to water once per week rather than daily, as this ensures adequate soil moisture.

How many corn can one plant produce?

One corn plant, given adequate growing conditions, will produce between two and four ears of corn. Early varieties produce fewer, while later-maturing types produce slightly more.

Can corn reseed itself?

The real miracle of corn is that the wild grass came to be domesticated at all. Bound in its neat package of tough husk, it is nearly impossible for corn to reseed itself.

Can you save sweet corn seed?

In order to keep seed corn through the winter, you must allow it to dry in the field many weeks longer than the rest of the crop and then air-dry it again after harvest. Leave your seed corn in place when you harvest your eating corn. Air-drying the corn kernels helps to prevent mold.

What does a corn seed look like?

Sweet corn kernels shrink as they dry, giving the mature seeds a wrinkled, translucent appearance. Corn kernels range in color from yellow, white, orange, and red to blue, green, and brown. Some varieties have striped, or variegated, kernels, and many varieties are known for their multicolored ears.

How can you tell when corn is ready to pick?

Corn is ready for harvest about 20 days after the silk first appears. At harvest time, the silk turns brown, but the husks are still green. Each stalk should have at least one ear near the top.

Does corn need full sun?

Sweet corn is quite easy to grow, but it does require ample growing space and plenty of sunlight. Corn won’t grow well at all if it is planted in a spot that receives less than six hours of full sun each day. Plant the seeds of early sweet corn varieties an inch deep and about six inches apart in good rich soil.
