If you’re a consumer or small business customer, calls to 0800, 0808 and 116 numbers are free from your mobile and landline. Many organisations use 03 numbers such as 0300, 0344 or 0345 as an alternative to more expensive 084 and 087 numbers. Calls to 03 numbers will cost no more than a call to a 01 or 02 number.

0800 and 0808: Freephone

The cost of calling an 024 number

When calling from a land line, calls to 024 numbers can cost up to 10p per minute, dependent on the time of day, and there is usually also a call set-up fee.

You can only phone 0203 numbers for free if you have inclusive minutes remaining on your landline or mobile tariff, otherwise you will have to pay your provider a per-minute rate plus an access charge as outlined in their terms.

These non-geographic numbers were introduced by Ofcom in 2007 across the UK. These numbers are usually reserved for non-profit organisations, charities and public support services. For this reason, 0300 numbers cost to call. They’re Not Free – 0300 numbers cost money to call and that’s the entire point.

The important thing to note is that 0300 numbers are regulated in the same way as local numbers that start 01 or 02. It doesn’t cost you any more to call an 0300 number than an 01 or 02 number. However, outside these deals, calls to an 0300 number from a mobile can cost from 3p per minute to 40p per minute.

What are 0800 numbers? 0800 numbers are a type of UK non-geographic phone number where the receiver is charged for the call, not the caller. Before the launch of 0800 numbers, Freephone calls were made by calling the operator and asking for a company by name.

A call to a 0333 number costs the same cost as a regular call to a landline or mobile home. If your fixed telephony offers include phone calls, calls to 0333 numbers will be included in the same way. The 0333 numbers are not the same as 0800 and 0808 free, but there may be many free calling rate rates.

Organisations that use 0333 numbers want to offer their clients/customers a single point of contact that is likely to remain unchanged for a long time. Examples of such organisations are non-governmental organisations such as large registered charities, big businesses and government departments.

No calls to 0345 numbers are not free. All numbers that start with 03, 01 and 02 are usually charged at the same standard landline rate. This is due to Ofcom regulation stating that 03, 01 and 02 numbers all have to be treated equally.

Calls to 0333 numbers from O2 are included in your monthly call allowance, so the time will be taken off the total amount of free minutes you have every month. If you run out of free minutes, calling 0333 numbers will cost 35p per minute.

If you have a monthly allowance for minutes then calling an 0333 number will cost you nothing and the length of the call will simply be deducted from your monthly allowance of minutes as calling an 0333 number is now the same as calling any ordinary landline or mobile number.

All calls to a 0333 number on this plan cost 11.3p per minute plus a 3.3p set up fee. If you make a call to a 0333 number from a BT mobile these are part of the set of free minutes offered with a BT mobile plan. Once these are used up, the cost of making a call is 35p per minute.
