Tommy Cooper (19 March 1921 – 15 April 1984) was a British prop comedian and magician who performed using a variety of props. A member of the Magic Circle, Cooper was well-liked and regarded by the world’s traditional magicians. His signature red fez distinguished him, and his 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) height and more than 15 stone (210 lb; 95 kg) weight distinguished him as a big and lumbering figure. Cooper collapsed and died from a heart attack on April 15, 1984, in front of millions of television viewers while performing on the London Weekend Television variety show Live From Her Majesty’s, which was broadcast live from Her Majesty’s Theatre. He was in the middle of his act when he passed away. In order to maintain his theatrical image, he needed his act to go horribly wrong for comedic effect, which caused some early confusion over whether or not this fall was genuine.
