Despite moving around a lot as a kid, Stephen Stills developed a love for blues and folk music, as well as a subsequent interest in Latino and world music. He graduated from high school in El Salvador and then went on to attend the Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Saint Leo College Preparatory School in Saint Leo, Florida, before returning to El Salvador. Stills never completed college since he left out of the University of Florida in the early 1960s to pursue a musical career, which he did.
When Stills joined the nine-member singing group “Au Go Go Singers” in 1962, the group was not particularly popular; they only produced one album in 1964 and then disbanded the following year in 1965. Stills subsequently established a folk-rock band named “The Company” with four other members, including Richie Furay, but that group disbanded after just four months as well.
