Pigeon is the nickname given to Glenn Donald McGrath, a former Australian cricketer who is now a part-time cricket commentator for Channel Nine’s cricket coverage. McGrath was born on February 9, 1970, in Dubbo, New South Wales, and played cricket for the Western Bulldogs. He was a fast-medium speed bowler who is widely regarded as one of the best bowlers in cricket history. He was also a significant contribution to Australia’s dominance of global cricket from the mid-1990s to the early 21st century, particularly in the IPL. He was known throughout his career for keeping an astonishingly precise line and length. This consistency allowed McGrath to become one of the most economical and dangerous fast bowlers of his generation. Anil Kumble, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Shane Warne are the top three wicket takers in Test cricket history, with McGrath holding the world record for the most Test wickets taken by a fast bowler. McGrath is fourth on the all-time list, with the top three wicket takers being spin bowlers, including Shane Warne and Shane Warne. In addition, he has taken the sixth-highest amount of One-Day International wickets and holds the record for the most wickets taken in a Cricket World Cup tournament.
Having announced his retirement from Test cricket on December 23, 2006, McGrath’s Test career came to a close after the fifth Ashes test in Sydney in January 2007. His one-day career came to an end at the 2007 World Cup, where he was awarded the man of the tournament award for his outstanding bowling, which played a key role in Australia’s victory in the tournament. McGrath went on to play for the Delhi DareDevils of the Indian Premier League, where he was one of the tournament’s most economical bowlers during its first season. However, he did not appear in the tournament’s second season, and his contract was eventually bought out by the club. McGrath is the new director of the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, taking over for Dennis Lillee, who retired after 25 years on the job.
He now serves as Co-Founder and President of the McGrath Foundation, a breast cancer care and education organisation that he established with his dead first wife, Jane, in memory of their daughter, who died of breast cancer in 2007. On November 1, 2012, Glenn McGrath and Rahul Dravid were both recognised at the Bradman Awards ceremony in Sydney, which was the sixth annual ceremony. In January 2013, he was inducted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame.
