Scott Richter is the CEO of Media Breakaway, formerly known as OptInRealBig.com LLC. He was born on July 18, 1971. Dynamic Dolphin and affiliate.com are two other related businesses. In 2006, he agreed to pay Microsoft $7 million to resolve a lawsuit claiming illegal spam activities. Richter used to be among the top 100 spammers on the ROKSO list, but he is no longer there. His firm used to send out 100 million emails per day. In 2003, Richter sent out an email offering most-wanted Iraqi playing cards, claiming to have sold 40,000 decks before they were even created. Richter was sued by the New York Attorney General in December 2003. In March 2005, OptInRealBig.com filed for bankruptcy protection after being hit with a $500 million judgement in Washington state as a result of the
Microsoft case. It claimed to have less than $10 million in assets and more than $50 million in debt. OptInRealBig was forced to file for bankruptcy after Microsoft refused to settle a $20 million claim based on Washington state spam laws. “OptIn is profitable except for these litigation,” said Steven Richter, Scott Richter’s father and President and General Counsel of Scott’s company. Rob Corddry interviewed him on The Daily Show on March 30, 2004. His company, Media Breakaway, was sued by major social networking website MySpace in January 2007 for allegedly getting access to members’ accounts and exploiting them to send millions of spam messages posing as from users’ accounts.
