Known for his national radio and television acts between 1937 and 1971, as well as his role as host of the television programme The Red Skelton Show, Richard Bernard “Red” Skelton (July 18, 1913 – September 17, 1997) was an American entertainer best known for his national radio and television acts between 1937 and 1971. Although Skelton is most known for his work in radio and television, he has also performed in vaudeville, films, nightclubs and casinos, all while pursuing a completely distinct artistic career. Skelton has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work in radio and television. Skelton started honing his comic and pantomime abilities at the age of ten, when he joined a travelling medical show that toured the country. After that, he spent some time on a showboat and on the burlesque circuit before making his way into vaudeville in 1934.
‘The Doughnut Dunkers,’ a pantomime skit about how various individuals eat doughnuts that was created by Skelton and his wife, started Skelton’s career in vaudeville, radio and cinema. When Skelton made a guest appearance on The Fleischmann’s Yeast Hour in 1937, it was the beginning of a long and fruitful radio career that culminated with his appointment as the presenter of Avalon Time in 1938. After joining The Raleigh Cigarettes Program in 1941, where he developed many of his comedic characters, he went on to host his own radio show until 1957, which was broadcast on a regular basis. Having Wonderful Time, directed by Alfred Santell, marked Skelton’s feature film debut, and he went on to appear in a number of other musical and comedy films throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, including Lady Be Good (1941), I Dood It (1943), Ziegfeld Follies (1946), Texas Carnival (1951), and The Clown (also directed by Alfred Santell) (1953).
His comfort in films, on the other hand, was never established, and he was always eager to work on television, even when the medium was in its infancy. It was on September 30, 1951, when NBC broadcasted the first episode of The Red Skelton Show. With the transition to CBS in 1954, Skelton’s show was extended to one hour and rebranded as The Red Skelton Hour in 1962. Despite its excellent ratings, CBS decided to terminate his television show in 1970 because the network felt that more youth-oriented programming was required to lure younger people and their purchasing power to the network.
