Jacques Cousteau, Sr. (December 30, 1940 – June 28, 1979) was an American documentary filmmaker who specialised on environmental problems. He had a background in oceanography and was trained as an oceanographer. He was the younger brother of Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his wife, Simone Cousteau, and the second son of the couple. Philippe Cousteau, a native of Toulon, France, made his first underwater dive using an aqua-lung in 1945. Since the age of seven, he has been a professional diver.

He grew up touring the globe, learning about various cultures, and learning a variety of languages as a pilot and a witness to the advancement of science in the art of diving and underwater adventure, among other things. In February 1967, Cousteau joined his father on a trip to film sharks in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean aboard the RV Calypso, which was chartered by the National Geographic Society. The expedition’s main photographer, Philippe also documented his experiences in the 1970 book Shark: Splendid Savage of the Sea, which was published by Penguin.

Until his death in 1979, he collaborated with his father on a number of documentaries, including Voyage to the Edge of the World (1976), which was shown in movie theatres, and his own PBS series, Oasis in Space (1977), which was broadcast on television and dealt with environmental problems. Cousteau contributed his technological knowledge to the SEALAB programme of the United States Navy. The next day, when aquanaut Berry L. Cannon died while trying to fix a leak in the underwater laboratory SEALAB III, Cousteau offered his assistance in returning SEALAB to the surface. SEALAB was eventually recovered in a less risky manner, and Cousteau declined the offer.
